Professor Aaron Mike Ocquaye, like many of us, appears to dislike telenovelas and the local subtitles that accompany them. He has caussion filmmakers to stop translating Foreign Films Into Our Native Tongues.
As a result, the astute Ghanaian politician and former Speaker of Parliament has called for the abolition of foreign telenovelas dubbed into Twi or any other Ghanaian language.
He also asked Ghanaian filmmakers to create original films to help facilitate this new direction than to translate Foreign Films Into Our Native Tongues.
The professor stated this at the University of Ghana’s inaugural memorial lecture for Okyenhene Ba Dr. Jones Akwasi Amoako Atta Ofori-Atta.
He contended that if this practise continues, our development as individuals with distinct identities will be severely harmed.
“I cannot help adding one matter. I beg our actors and scriptwriters to come out with Ghanaian films. I get sick anytime I hear Twi words or Ga words pushed through some European or Asian lips. The practice should be stopped if we should develop as a people.
“These are the things that unmake a nation [sic]. It can never happen in Malaysia. It can never happen in India. It can never happen in any of the Asian tiger countries,” Professor Mike Ocquaye stated.
