Oscars 2023:Everything Everywhere leads nominees for the Academy Awards

The nominations are led by Everything Everywhere, At Once, with Banshees of Inisherin coming in second. British talents mostly lost out on the attention while Asian and Irish talent received a lot of it. The glitzy event is scheduled for March.

Oscar nominations are led by Everything Everywhere All At Once,” as blockbuster movies win the best picture award.

The Banshees Of Inisherin and All Quiet On The Western Front both received nine nominations, narrowly behind the sci-fi independent film that has gained worldwide acclaim.

It was a particularly successful year for first-timers, with 16 of the 20 actor nominations going to first-time nominees, while Asian and Irish talent shone in all of the acting categories.

Avatar: The Way of the Warrior, Top Gun, and Elvis all made the cut for the prestigious Best Picture category, which is uncommon because it normally only honors movies that have received critical acclaim and have fared exceptionally well at the box office.

Avatar shattered box office records, grossing over $2 billion (£1.6 billion) globally, Top Gun $ 1.5 billion (£1.2 billion), and Elvis over $280 million (£230 million).

One frequent criticism of the Oscars is that the movies chosen by critics and business insiders don’t usually align with popular sentiment. However, this year things may turn out very differently.

Regarding the sequels only

Another first for the category was the nomination of two sequels, Top Gun and Avatar. In the history of the Oscars, only eight sequels have ever been selected, and never before have two been picked in the same year.

The best picture category was increased to 10 films last year in an effort to include genres that might not traditionally be considered Oscar-worthy.

Despite predictions that streaming companies will displace conventional movie releases and the fact that Apple TV+ was the source of last year’s winner, Coda, this year’s top category only included Netflix (for All Quiet).

The Fabelmans, Tar, Women Talking, and Triangle Of Sadness are the other movies competing for best picture.

Which actors were nominated?

It wasn’t the finest year for British talent, with just Bill Nighy and Andrea Riseborough making the cut, despite the success of rookies, Asian, and Irish stars.

Five newcomers were nominated in the best actor category, including 73-year-old actor Bill Nighy for his depiction of a stuffy businessman who learns to appreciate life.

The Banshees Of Inisherin and Aftersun co-stars Colin Farrell and Paul Mescal, both of Irish descent, also made the cut. They will compete against American celebrities Austin Butler for Elvis and Brendan Fraser for The Whale.

Prior to the announcement, there were great expectations for Fraser because his comeback to the big screen after over 20 years away was nicknamed the “Brenaissance.”

Fraser said to Sky News in an interview before the nominations: “The award thing is new to me, but we’re all excited and ecstatic about it, keeping our fingers crossed and harboring the highest expectations for victory. But who can predict what will happen? But I’m optimistic because I believe we have a chance to cross the finish line ahead of schedule.”

Michelle Williams, a five-time candidate for best actress, will be hoping that this year is her year, especially after arguing that her performance as Mitzi Fabelman, Spielberg’s fictitious mother, should have been recognized for best actress rather than best supporting actress.

Williams stated to Sky News in an interview before the nominations: “Since this is the only thing I’ve ever done, I do it for my own feeling of fulfillment, purpose, and self-esteem. I want to feel a particular way about my contribution to this work, which I’ve been doing for 30 years. Additionally, it’s constantly about doing something new that I haven’t been able to do previously. Expansion, a tiny push outside my comfort zone, that’s the delight I experience.”

Williams and other first-time nominations Michelle Yeoh for Everything Everywhere, Ana de Armas for Blonde, and Andrea Riseborough for To Leslie compete for the title of best actress alongside Cate Blanchett for Tar.

Many people are surprised by Riseborough’s nomination because her movie, about an alcoholic who seeks atonement after wasting her lottery riches and forsaking her kid, was created on a tight budget and in just 19 days.

A number of Hollywood celebrities, including Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Winslet, Jennifer Aniston, and Amy Adams, have recently endorsed the product; it is obvious that the last-minute push worked.

Banshees never cease to dazzle.

Brendan Gleeson, Barry Keoghan, and Kerry Condon all received accolades for their roles in Martin McDonagh’s comedy The Banshees, which centers on a guy who is left perplexed after his closest friend throws him out.

Glesson and Keoghan will compete against former child star Ke Huy Quan in Everything Everywhere, Brian Tyree Henry in Causeway, and Judd Hirsch (the only other actor in the category to have previously been nominated) for The Fabelmans.

Condon will compete against Angela Bassett for best supporting actress, whose nomination for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is the first acting nomination for a Marvel movie (apart from Chadwick Boseman’s posthumous 2021 candidacy).

Hong Chau for The Whale, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Stephanie Hsu for Everything Everywhere are the other candidates for best supporting actress; once again, they are all first-timers.

snubbed female directors

Despite women winning the award two years in a row (Chloe Zhao in 2021 and Jane Campion in 2022) due to an all-male best director list, this year’s winner will not be a female.

Spielberg and McDonagh, both former Oscar winners who have both gotten nominations in related categories at past ceremonies, will continue to compete against one another for the title of best director.

Todd Field for Tar, Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (collectively known as “The Daniels”) for Everything Everywhere, and Ruben Ostlund for Triangle Of Sadness is the other men competing for the best director Oscar.

Allison Williams, the actress of Girls, and Oscar-winning actor and producer Riz Ahmed revealed the nominees in 23 categories.

Can I watch the actual Oscars when and where?

This year’s awards, which will be presented in March during a star-studded gala hosted by US talk show presenter Jimmy Kimmel, were open to 351 films.

All nominated films must have premiered in a for-profit theater in at least one of six US cities between January 1 and December 31, 2017.

Additionally, they need to have been performed there for a minimum of seven days in a row and have a running time of at least 40 minutes.

On Sunday, March 12, at midnight, Sky Showcase will be the only place to watch the Oscars.
