After receiving a standing ovation for the Irish dancing spectacle Riverdance at the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest intermission, the performer initially gained notoriety. Later, Riverdance was expanded into a full-length production, and Flatley then created his own theater production, Lord of the Dance.

According to a message on his Instagram account, Irish-American dancer Michael Flatley has “an aggressive type of cancer” and had surgery.

The Irish dancing piece Riverdance, which debuted as a seven-minute intermission during the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest, launched the 64-year-old dancer and choreographer to renown.

“Dear Friends, We Have Something Personal To Share, Michael Flatley Has Been Diagnosed With An Aggressive Form Of Cancer,” said the message on Flatley’s account.

“There won’t be any further remarks made at this time.

“We simply ask for your kind thoughts and prayers. I’m grateful. Teamlord.”

Following Riverdance’s triumph at Eurovision, a full-length production of it debuted in 1995 at Dublin’s Point Theatre.

Flatley, an Irish-American from a working-class background who was born in Chicago, continued with his own theater production, Lord Of The Dance.

Other projects he has conceived, produced, and directed include Celtic Tiger and Feet Of Flames.

More than 60 million people have seen Flatley’s performances, which have brought in more than $1 billion (£823 million) worldwide.

In an effort to generate money for the humanitarian effort in Ukraine, Flatley also started a Lord Of The Dance tour the previous year.

In 2018, he made a foray into the world of film, directing and appearing in the spy thriller Blackbird.
