When you want to introduce a brand-new streaming service in the UK, who do you contact among the big names in British film and television?
Why Damian Lewis, the Emmy and Golden Globe winner who stars as the lead in the brand-new thriller A Spy Among Friends, which made its television debut this week on ITVX.
Lewis plays MI5 agent Nicholas Elliot in the program, which was adopted from the book of the same name by former Scots Guard Alex Cary. He discovers that his buddy and colleague Kim Philby (played by Guy Pearce) has defected to the KGB.
The actors use received pronunciation, there are secret meetings, and there are many lies in this performance.
He cited the novel as the primary inspiration for accepting the part when asked why by Backstage, a TV and movie podcast from Sky News.
He declared, “I adored it.”
Kim Philby, a well-known traitor and member of the infamous Cambridge espionage ring of KGB operatives, is well-known in this country. Nicholas Elliott, on the other hand, was unknown yet his closest friend.
“We wanted to really study Kim Philby’s friendships and more private interactions with his close friend Nicholas Elliott and how Elliott enabled his effective spying for 30 years. We sort of wanted to delve… beneath the facade of a very well-known guy.
So, I was extremely interested in investigating the subtler distinctions between friendship and treachery.
Lewis continued, saying to Backstage: “The real-life figures are venerated.” “This man has been getting away with it for a very long time. So how did he accomplish it? How could they go 30 years without noticing?
“That’s the lens that we’ve tried to tell this narrative through. Nicholas Elliott somehow missed it. Everyone else, including his best pal.
“By the conclusion of the six hours, we witness a man who is drowning in vodka and dissatisfied with Moscow and Russia. He never wanted to move there because he loved the secrecy and exclusivity of his job.
“And in the end, just through his treachery, he was a mass murderer.”
Another MI5 spy with a northern accent who stands out from her colleagues is Lily Thomas, played by Anna Maxwell Martin, who also stars in the program.
Did you say, Welsh? Maxwell Martin said, “I don’t know, it went all around the country,” to director Nick Murphy’s teasing.
Line of Duty and Motherland actress Maxwell Martin, who is best recognized for these roles, continued: “Simply put, I want to constantly do something new to avoid feeling like I’m doing the same thing. And it truly represented a radical change from everything else.”
After their time on the show, do the actors and creators believe they might be spies?
Murphy answered, “Oh, I’d love it… I’d enjoy the sensation of superiority.
But Maxwell Martin only said, “Not for me.”
Author Cary continues, “I assume that I am a fantasist of some type as a writer, so, yeah, absolutely.
I mean, listen, the wonderful part about being a spy is that you feel better than them and know something that nobody else knows.
However, Lewis may have provided the best summary: Fun – it seems a little exciting.
